I also want to be safe.. and things can happen while camping.. so we will need a phone..
I also want to read my scriptures at night before we go to sleep.. which now includes bringing a book. Three forms of media are now on my non-media trip.
So can I ever really go off media? Realistically? Probably not. So I am going to start calling this media break I constantly want.. LIFE EXTRAVAGANZA!!! It sounds more fun and to me it means that I will go out in nature, be with people, live life and still have a little bit of media. Since its inevitable.
Theres my rant today.
Amen! In a way, I think we can take a break from media, but I don't know if it's possible to take a break from ALL forms of media (at least for an extended period of time). In fact, I took a class that required a weekend of no technology (Rec Management 300). I did it, but when I came back to my phone...there were message from my visiting teachers, emails from my professors, calls from my family and friends, etc.... that Monday I learned that I had to have media in order to keep up with my life and be successful. Media has become not just a form of communication, but THE Form of Communication. It's crazy and I wish it wasn't that way-- so I could leave my phone at home for a day and not worry about the next thing I have to do.
ReplyDeleteBut alas, we have to learn to live with it and more importantly, how to take moderate breaks.
Rather than trying to get away from all media (because how realistic is that?) I think it's beneficial to put constraints on the forms of media you do use. I like to put a set amount of time that I let myself peruse Facebook every day so I don't fall into the habit of mindlessly scrolling for hours on end.
